A horror web series crew travels to an abandoned asylum for a live broadcast. They soon encounter a lot more than they expected as they move deeper into the nightmarish old building. The filmmakers couldn’t get permission from the South Korean government to film in the actual hospital, so the scenes set in Gonjiam were actually filmed at the Busan National Naval High School, where the production team closely followed the hospital’s floor plan to recreate the exact same exterior and hallways. Yet on the way to the hospital, they reference a previous trip. The shot of everyone jumping into the water is of the same faces who supposedly just met.

Two teenagers are in the abandoned Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital in front of the infamous Room 402, trying to open the door and streaming from their cell phones. They soon disappear before they can open the door.

The owner of the YouTube channel “Horror Times”, Ha-joon (Wi Ha-joon), decides to live stream from Gonjiam, hoping to reach one million views, with sponsors paying half a million dollars for advertisements. Ha-joon joins a crew of six teenagers: three boys, Sung-hoon (Park Sung-hoon), Seung-wook (Seung-Wook Lee), and Je-Yoon (Jay Yoo); and three girls, Ah-yeon (Ah-yeon Oh) and rookies Charlotte (Ye-Won Mun) and Ji-Hyun (Park Ji-Hyun), to spend the night in Gonjiam and broadcast it live. Ha-joon stays behind in the base tent controlling the broadcast to edit his selection before streaming it to the viewers, and the group splits up and goes up to the four floors of the hospital. The girls are unaware that Ha-joon, Sung-hoon, and Seung-wook have installed fake supernatural effects on the girls and consequently on the viewers, who would be scared by the effects. When the effects activate, Charlotte and Ji-Hyun are startled and scared, but they are convinced to stay with the group.
The conclusion is a bit pointless
But out of nowhere, supernatural activities begin to occur at Gonjiam, and Ha-joon tries to understand what is happening and continue streaming. “Gon-ji-am”, also known as “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum”. (2018) is a predictable but tense "found footage" style film. This low-budget film has a gruesome and chaotic motion picture, shot with a practical camera, and is scary but confusing. "Gon-ji-am" is recommended for horror fans who like the cheap shooting style, as the unoriginal plot is funny.
